About

COME AND SING with the Toronto Shapenote Group the third Wednesday of every month from 7:30-9:30 pm. We sing from the The Sacred Harp, 1991 revision songbook. Experienced and not so experienced singers are welcome, and loaner books are available.

In addition to the singing, you can stop by a half-hour early at 7:00 pm as Gillian Inksetter will lead a 30-minute singing school (workshop), which includes lots of singing and is a great way to learn bite-size portions of the rudiments of Sacred Harp singing in the Southern tradition, from leading songs to singing with accent and much more. We’ll sit in the same formation and learn a little something we can put into practice right away. The main singing will start at 7:30.

We gather in the Music Room of Bloor Street United Church at 300 Bloor Street West (near Huron). (Note: After 7:00, we must now use the door at 470 Huron St., off the parking lot!)

Monthly Singing June 2014That’s a very short walk from the Spadina station on the Bloor line. There’s paid parking behind the building; there may also be on-street parking in the surrounding neighbourhood. Enter by the westernmost (courtyard) door off Bloor: the one with the “300” above it. Unfortunately, it is not handicap accessible.

We also have a more informal singing earlier in the month at someone’s home. The day and time are variable, so join our mailing list to keep informed. You can join the email list by contacting Pleasance Crawford by by email.

We have been singing together since the Fall of 2000. For years we met at St. Stephen-in-the-fields Anglican, but their financial difficulties forced us to move to Bloor Street United.

We have connections with many other Ontario Shapenote groups, and we all gather together in August for the Central Ontario All-Day Sing (with dinner on the grounds, of course!).

Also, you can join our Facebook group to keep up-to-date on many other shape-note singing events in the area.

  1. I live south of Hamilton ON near Lake Erie and I am very interested in this form of singing. Are there any groups in the Hamilton/Niagara area?
    Thank you.

    1. I’m guessing the nearest singing to you would be the Guelph one, usually on the third Friday of the month. It’s held at Priory Park Baptist Church, 8 Torch Lane. Contact < bill.sue.woodward at sympatico.ca > for more information.

And then there is the annual all-day singing – which I highly recommend. It’s near Cambridge in North Dumfries on Saturday, August 27. Information here, or on Facebook.

And you are always welcome to join us in Toronto at our third-Wednesday singings if you are in the neighbourhood.
